Objetivo Evaluar la eficacia y la seguridad de la trabeculostomía con láser excímero (ELT) y facoemulsificación en ojos con hipertensión ocular (HTO) o glaucoma leve y catarata. Métodos Estudio unicéntrico de ojos a los que se realizó facoemulsificación y ELT entre 2017 y 2021. Se evaluó el cambio en la presión intraocular (PIO), la necesidad de medicamentos para controlar la PIO, la agudeza visual mejor corregida, las complicaciones y las reintervenciones. El éxito del procedimiento se definió como una reducción del 20% de la PIO, una PIO ≤14mmHg o la reducción de medicamentos con una PIO menor o igual a la preoperatoria. Resultados El seguimiento promedio fue de 658 ±64días. El promedio de PIO preoperatoria fue 17,76 ±4,88mmHg y disminuyó a 15,35 ±3,10mmHg al año de seguimiento (n=37) (p = 0,006) y a 14,00 ±3,78mmHg a los 3años (n=8) (p=0,074). El número de medicamentos para controlar la PIO disminuyó de 2,02 ±1,00 en el preoperatorio a 1,02 ±0,96 al año (n=37) (p<0,001) y a 1,63 ±0,92 a los 3años de seguimiento (n=8) (p=0,197). El éxito completo se alcanzó en el 17,7% de los ojos y el éxito calificado en el 54,8%. Dos ojos de 2 pacientes presentaron hipema postoperatorio temprano. Dos ojos de un paciente requirieron una cirugía filtrante y dos ojos de un paciente una trabeculoplastia selectiva para controlar la PIO. Conclusiones La combinación de ELT y facoemulsificación es efectiva y segura en ojos con HTO o glaucoma leve y catarata. En esta serie hubo una reducción significativa de la PIO y del número de medicamentos para controlar la PIO (AU)

RESUMO

This clinical case describes an esthetic rehabilitation of a young patient presenting with erosive tooth wear. The etiological factors for the erosion in this clinical case was excessive carbonated beverages and lemon water intake. The patient's main complaint was the yellowish aspect of her smile. The treatment procedure selected was direct resin composite veneers in the six maxillary anterior teeth. A three-year follow-up of the case is presented. The three-year follow-up showed a successful clinical performance of the treatment procedure after a finishing/polishing protocol.

RESUMO

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that can be activated by structurally diverse compounds arising from the environment and the microbiota and host metabolism. Expanding evidence has been shown that the modulation of the canonical pathway of AHR occurs during several chronic diseases and that its abrogation might be of clinical interest for metabolic and inflammatory pathological processes. However, most of the evidence on the pharmacological abrogation of the AHR-CYP1A1 axis has been reported in vitro, and therefore, guidance for in vivo studies is needed. In this review, we cover the state-of-the-art of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of AHR antagonists and CYP1A1 inhibitors in different in vivo rodent (mouse or rat) models of disease. This review will serve as a road map for those researchers embracing this emerging therapeutic area targeting the AHR. Moreover, it is a timely opportunity as the first AHR antagonists have recently entered the clinical stage of drug development.

Ketamine (KET) is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist with rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effects, but how the drug shows its sustained effects is still a matter of controversy. The objectives were to evaluate the mechanisms for KET rapid (30 min) and long-lasting (15 and 30 days after) antidepressant effects in mice. A single dose of KET (2, 5, or 10 mg/kg, po) was administered to male Swiss mice and the forced swim test (FST) was performed 30 min, 15, or 30 days later. Imipramine (IMI, 30 mg/kg, ip), a tricyclic antidepressant drug, was used as reference. The mice were euthanized, separated into two time-point groups (D1, first day after KET injection; D30, 30 days later), and brain sections were processed for glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3), histone deacetylase (HDAC), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunohistochemical assays. KET (5 and 10 mg/kg) presented rapid and long-lasting antidepressant-like effects. As expected, the immunoreactivities for brain GSK-3 and HDAC decreased compared to control groups in all areas (striatum, DG, CA1, CA3, and mainly pre-frontal cortex, PFC) after KET injection. Increases in BDNF immunostaining were demonstrated in the PFC, DG, CA1, and CA3 areas at D1 and D30 time-points. GFAP immunoreactivity was also increased in the PFC and striatum at both time-points. In conclusion, KET changed brain BDNF and GFAP expressions 30 days after a single administration. Although neuroplasticity could be involved in the observed effects of KET, more studies are needed to explain the mechanisms for the drug's sustained antidepressant-like effects.

METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study with 70 individuals divided into two groups. Group A consisted of 35 volunteers who were being preoperatively prepared for the construction of arteriovenous fistula. Group B consisted of 35 non-renal patients selected by convenience. Each participant underwent physical examination, including venous percussion, of the dominant upper limb and then ultrasound. Interobserver agreement was assessed between a trained vascular surgeon performing percussion and fourth-year medical student. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of percussion were determined in relation to ultrasound. The agreement between the methods, venous percussion and venous duplex ultrasound was also evaluated by the Kappa index. RESULTS: The overall interobserver agreement for the percussion was 0.74 (95% CI 0.632 to 0.851). It was observed that the results were more favorable in the cephalic vein than in the basilic vein, emphasizing that the cephalic is more used in venous punctures, because of its anatomical location and visibility, and in fistula construction. The 35 percussions of the cephalic forearm vein in Group A resulted in a sensitivity of 1.0 (95% CI 0.63 to 1.00), specificity of 0.96 (95% CI 0.81 to 1.00), a positive predictive value of 0.89(95% CI 0.52 to 1.00) and a negative predictive value of 1.00 (95% CI 0.87 to 1.00), with an accuracy of 0.97 (95% CI 0.85 to 1.00) and Kappa index of 0.92 (95% CI 0.77 to 1.00) in relation to ultrasound. Overall, when all venous segments were analyzed in group A, the Kappa index of agreement between the percussion and the ultrasonography reached 0.56 (95% CI 0.401 to 0.72). All venous segments in Group A had a sensitivity of 0.54 (95% CI 0.37 to 0.70) and a specificity of 0.96 (95% CI 0.90 to 0.99). When all venous segments were analyzed in group B, the Kappa index of agreement between the percussion and the ultrasonography reached 0.48 (95% CI 0.34 to 0.62). All venous segments in Group B had a sensitivity of 0.70 (95% CI 0.59 to 0.79) and a specificity of 0.82 (95% CI 0.69 to 0.91). CONCLUSION: Venous percussion of the upper limbs has a high positive predictive value and high specificity, when compared to ultrasound as a way to evaluate the patency and adequacy of the cephalic vein. Although there is not enough evidence to preclude ultrasound, percussion should definitely be included in the traditional physical exam evaluation of upper limbs superficial veins.

Adseverin (Ads) is a Ca2+-dependent actin-capping and severing protein that is highly expressed in gastric, prostate and bladder cancer cells. Currently it is unknown whether Ads contributes to the subcortical actin remodeling associated with the formation of cell extensions and matrix invasion in cancer. We compared cell extension formation and matrix degradation in Ads wildtype and Ads-null MCF7 breast cancer cells generated by CRISPR/Cas9. Compared with wildtype, Ads-null cells plated on fibronectin or collagen exhibited a more circular morphology with shorter cell extensions (37% reduction on fibronectin; p < 0.001). Reconstitution of Ads in Ads-null cells restored the formation of cell extensions (p < 0.05). While cell migration on two-dimensional matrices was unchanged by Ads deletion, the formation of cell extensions across Transwell membranes was reduced (~40% reduction, p < 0.05). When plated on fibrillar collagen, compared with wildtype, Ads-null cells showed reduced expression of MT1-MMP, collagen degradation (p < 0.05) and phagocytosis of collagen-coated beads (25% reduction; p = 0.001). We conclude that Ads is involved in the formation of cell extensions and collagen degradation in MCF7 cells, which may in turn affect matrix invasion and metastasis.

Discoidin Domain Receptor (DDR) genes and their homologues have been identified in sponges, worms and flies. These genes code for proteins that are implicated in cell adhesion to matrix proteins. DDRs are now recognized as playing central regulatory roles in several high prevalence human diseases, including invasive cancers, atherosclerosis, and organ fibrosis. While the mechanisms by which DDRs contribute to these diseases are just now being delineated, one of the common themes involves cell adhesion to collagen and the assembly and organization of collagen fibers in the extracellular matrix. In mammals, the multi-functional roles of DDRs in promoting cell adhesion to collagen fibers and in mediating collagen-dependent signaling, suggest that DDRs contribute to multiple pathways of extracellular matrix remodeling, which are centrally important processes in health and disease. In this review we consider that interactions of the cytoplasmic domains of DDR1 with cytoskeletal motor proteins may contribute to matrix remodeling by promoting collagen fiber alignment and compaction. Poorly controlled collagen remodeling with excessive compaction of matrix proteins is a hallmark of fibrotic lesions in many organs and tissues that are affected by infectious, traumatic or chemical-mediated injury. An improved understanding of the mechanisms by which DDRs mediate collagen remodeling and collagen-dependent signaling could suggest new drug targets for treatment of fibrotic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are rare in the general population, but they account for nearly 70% of peripheral arterial aneurysms. There are several possible surgical approaches including exclusion of the aneurysm and bypass grafting, or endoaneurysmorrhaphy and interposition of a prosthetic conduit. The outcomes following the first approach are favorable, but persistent blood flow in the aneurysm sac has been documented in up to one third of patients in the early post-operative setting. Complications from incompletely excluded aneurysms include aneurysm enlargement, local compression symptoms, and sac rupture. Notably infection of a previously excluded and bypassed PAA is rare. This is the third reported case of PAA infection after exclusion and bypass grafting and the first due to Serratia liquefaciens. METHODS: Relevant medical data were collected from the hospital database. RESULTS: This case report describes a 54 year old male patient, diagnosed with acute limb ischaemia due to a thrombosed PAA, submitted to emergency surgery with exclusion and venous bypass. A below the knee amputation was necessary 3 months later. Patient follow-up was lost until 7 years following surgical repair, when he was diagnosed with aneurysm sac infection with skin fistulisation. He had recently been diagnosed with alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis Child-Pugh Class B. The patient was successfully treated by aneurysm resection, soft tissue debridement and systemic antibiotics. CONCLUSION: PAA infection is a rare complication after exclusion and bypass procedures but should be considered in any patient with evidence of local or systemic infection. When a PAA infection is diagnosed, aneurysmectomy, local debridement, and intravenous antibiotic therapy are recommended. The "gold standard" method of PAA repair remains controversial. PAA excision or endoaneurysmorrhaphy avoids complications from incompletely excluded aneurysms, but is associated with a high risk of neurological damage.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic embolisation of stents represents a rare complication of coronary interventions. REPORT: The case of a patient with peripheral embolisation of a coronary stent while undergoing a coronary procedure for an ischaemic event is reported. The stent lodged at a previously created iatrogenic fistula joining the profunda femoral artery and the common femoral vein. An endovascular attempt was ineffective in treating this complication. The stent was removed surgically and the fistula repaired. DISCUSSION: This unusual clinical setting of stent embolisation concomitant to an iatrogenic arteriovenous femoral fistula is reported.

Vascular basement membrane remodeling involves assembly and degradation of its main constituents, type IV collagen (Col IV) and laminin, which is critical during development, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. Remodeling can also occur at cell-biomaterials interface altering significantly the biocompatibility of implants. Here we describe the fate of adsorbed Col IV in contact with endothelial cells adhering on positively charged NH2 or hydrophobic CH3 substrata, both based on self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) and studied alone or mixed in different proportions. AFM studies revealed distinct pattern of adsorbed Col IV, varying from single molecular deposition on pure NH2 to network-like assembly on mixed SAMs, turning to big globular aggregates on bare CH3. Human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs) interact better with Col IV adsorbed as single molecules on NH2 surface and readily rearrange it in fibril-like pattern that coincide with secreted fibronectin fibrils. The cells show flattened morphology and well-developed focal adhesion complexes that are rich on phosphorylated FAK while expressing markedly low pericellular proteolytic activity. Conversely, on hydrophobic CH3 substrata HUVECs showed abrogated spreading and FAK phosphorylation, combined with less reorganization of the aggregated Col IV and significantly increased proteolytic activity. The later involves both MMP-2 and MMP-9, as measured by zymography and FITC-Col IV release. The mixed SAMs support intermediate remodeling activity. Taken together these results show that chemical functionalization combined with Col IV preadsorption provides a tool for guiding the endothelial cells behavior and pericellular proteolytic activity, events that strongly affect the fate of cardiovascular implants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent, long-term progressive degenerative disorder with great social impact. It is currently thought that, in addition to neurodegeneration, vascular changes also play a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Visual symptoms are frequent and are an early clinical manifestation; a number of psychophysiologic changes occur in visual function, including visual field defects, abnormal contrast sensitivity, abnormalities in color vision, depth perception deficits, and motion detection abnormalities. These visual changes were initially believed to be solely due to neurodegeneration in the posterior visual pathway. However, evidence from pathology studies in both animal models of AD and humans has demonstrated that neurodegeneration also takes place in the anterior visual pathway, with involvement of the retinal ganglion cells' (RGCs) dendrites, somata, and axons in the optic nerve. These studies additionally showed that patients with AD have changes in retinal and choroidal microvasculature. Pathology findings have been corroborated in in-vivo assessment of the retina and optic nerve head (ONH), as well as the retinal and choroidal vasculature. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) in particular has shown great utility in the assessment of these changes, and it may become a useful tool for early detection and monitoring disease progression in AD. The authors make a review of the current understanding of retinal and choroidal pathological changes in patients with AD, with particular focus on in-vivo evidence of retinal and choroidal neurodegenerative and microvascular changes using OCT technology.

The anti-transplant rejection drug cyclosporin A (CsA) causes loss of collagen homeostasis in rapidly remodeling connective tissues, such as human gingiva. As a result of CsA treatment, collagen degradation by fibroblasts is inhibited, which leads to a net increase of tissue collagen and gingival overgrowth. Since fibrillar collagen is the primary ligand for the discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1), we hypothesized that CsA perturbs DDR1-associated functions that affect collagen homeostasis. For these experiments, human fibroblasts obtained from gingival explants or mouse 3T3 fibroblasts (wild type, over-expressing DDR1 or DDR1 knockdown) or mouse GD25 cells (expressing DDR1 but null for ß1 integrin), were treated with vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide) or with CsA. The effect of CsA on cell binding to collagen was examined by flow cytometry; cell-mediated collagen remodeling was analyzed with contraction, compaction and migration assays. We found that CsA inhibited cell binding to collagen, internalization of collagen, contraction of collagen gels and cell migration over collagen in a DDR1-dependent manner. CsA also enhanced collagen compaction around cell extensions. Treatment with CsA strongly reduced surface levels of ß1 integrins in wild type and DDR1 over-expressing 3T3 cells but did not affect ß1 integrin activation or focal adhesion formation. We conclude that CsA inhibition of collagen remodeling is mediated through its effects on both DDR1 and cell surface levels of the ß1 integrin.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do óleo de pequi no processo cicatricial de lesões cutâneas em ratos. A pesquisa foi iniciada após a provação da CEUA- FACID sob o nº de protocolo 005/12 e obedeceu aos princípios éticos da experimentação animal de acordo com a Lei Federal nº 11.794/2008. Foram utilizados 20 ratos machos, Wistar (Rattusnorvegicus), peso corpóreo de 300-350g, divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos iguais: GI- controle (C); GII- tratado com óleo de pequi (T). Cada grupo foi dividido em dois subgrupos, de cinco animais cada, conforme os tempos experimentais estudados de 7(A) e 14(B) dias. Após anestesia e antissepsia foi produzida cirurgicamente ferida circular de 2,5 cm de diâmetro na região dorso lombar do animal. Os animais do Grupo II foram tratados com aplicação tópica diária de 1 ml do óleo de pequi, respeitando os tempos experimentais descritos. Concomitante à mensuração da área da lesão, os ratos foram eutanasiados para realização do processamento histológico e análise do percentual de regressão das lesões. No grupo GII nos diferentes tempos experimentais de 7 e 14 dias foi observado maior percentual de regressão das lesões em relação ao GI (p < 0,05). A partir da análise histológica foi possível detectar que no GII houve menor número de células inflamatórias e maior número de fibroblastos em relação ao GI nos diferentes tempos experimentais (p < 0,001). Conclui-se que o uso do óleo de pequi apresentou influência positiva no processo de reparo de lesões cutâneas em ratos, por promover maior velocidade do reparo tecidual, fato evidenciado pelo fechamento mais rápido das feridas e observação de características inflamatórias reduzidas no grupo tratado em relação ao grupo controle, sugerindo que a inflamação pode já ter regredido no grupo tratado.


ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of pequi oil in the healing process of skin lesions in rats. The research was initiated after the ordeal of CEUA- FACID with protocol No. 005/12 and following the ethical principles of animal experimentation according to the Federal Law No. 11,794 / 2008. 20 Wistar rats were used (Rattus norvegicus), with body weight ranging from 300-350g. They were randomly divided into two groups: GI control (C) and GII treated with pequi oil (T). Each group was divided into two subgroups of five animals each, according to the experimental study of 7 days (A) and 14 (B) days. After anesthesia and antisepsis, a circular wound of 2.5 cm of diameter was surgically inflicted in the lumbar dorsal region of the animal. The animals in Group II were treated with daily topical application of 1 ml of pequi oil, respecting the described experimental times. Concomitantly with the measurement of the injury area, the rats were euthanized so that a histological processing and a regression analysis of the percentage of injuries could be performed. In GII, at different experimental times of 7 and 14 days, there were a higher percentage of lesions regression compared to GI (p <0.05). From the histological examination it was possible to detect that, at GII, there were a lower number of inflammatory cells and increased number of fibroblasts compared to IM at different time of the trial (P <0.001). It is concluded that the use of pequi oil presented positive influence on the healing process of skin lesions in rats by promoting quicker tissue repair, as indicated by the faster closure of the wounds and the observation of reduced inflammatory characteristics in the group treated compared to the control group, suggesting that the inflammation could have already receded in the treated group.

INTRODUCTION: Male, 72-year-old, morbidly obese, diabetic, admitted for abdominal pain, prostration and fever that started last 3 days. Abdominal ultrasound and abdominal computed tomography scan showed liver injury in the transition of V and VI segments measuring 8.4 cm. Due to the possibility of liver abscess, initiate empirical antibiotic therapy with ampicillin and sulbactam and metronidazole and performed ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage of liver injury. Negative for malignant cells, with the presence of leukocytes and negative culture. After 2 weeks of treatment, take control image without changing the lesion dimension. New percutaneous drainage with the same results. We opted for performing endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with fine-needle aspiration (FNA). FNA pathology: Moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemistry suggestive of metastasis of the lower gastrointestinal tract. Due this finding, realized colonoscopy, which revealed a vegetating lesion with central ulceration, bleeding, filling almost the entire cecum. Patient was referred for surgical resection of the bowel tumor, which showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma infiltrating vegetative and possibly originated from villous adenoma with high-grade dysplasia. DISCUSSION: The finding of metastatic liver abscess of colonic neoplasia is not common. In most cases, the material from the abscess drainage allows the diagnosis, but in this case, even after two ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage was not obtained conclusive bacteriological or histopathological. Opted for new puncture through EUS, which allowed definitive diagnosis of the condition. CONCLUSION: Metastatic colon neoplasm should be considered in cases of differential diagnosis of liver abscess.

INTRODUCTION: The endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is an endoscopic technique of proven clinical validity today, having a significant impact on the diagnosis and evaluation of several diseases with a low complication rate. The EUS-fine-needle aspiration (FNA) allows the evaluation of subepithelial lesions, extra-luminal lymph nodes or the gastrointestinal tract that are difficult to access by other methods with safe and high diagnostic accuracy. AIMS AND METHODS: In the case reported, the EUS-FNA was useful for the differential diagnosis with residual biliary microlithiasis and the diagnosis of non-oncologic pathology. RESULTS: Male, white, 35-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus and tuberculosis treatment for about 5 months presented with jaundice. No fever, weight loss or abdominal pain. Choluria and hipocholia. History of cholecystectomy for about 1 year due to cholelithiasis. Laboratory tests showed cholestatic jaundice (direct hyperbilirrubinemia). Abdominal ultrasound showed liver without particularities, without biliary dilatation or filling defects. Initially suspected hepatitis due tuberculosis drugs so, the treatment was suspended. After a week with no drugs, no improvement in jaundice was observed. In contrast, a progressive increase indirect bilirubin. EUS performed with identification of mass along the distal common bile duct near the duodenal papilla. FNA performed with the presence of lymphocytes and tuberculosis bacile positive. After, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was performed with sphincterotomy and placement of endoprosthesis for biliary drainage. The tuberculosis drugs were restarted with the plan to complete. The jaundice was resoluted. The patient completed 9 months of treatment and abdominal tomography has not identified a mass in that place. CONCLUSION: The EUS-FNA was proven to be a useful tool for diagnosis of non-oncologic pathologies like tuberculosis.

Considering the structural role of type IV collagen (Col IV) in the assembly of the basement membrane (BM) and the perspective of mimicking its organization for vascular tissue engineering purposes, we studied the adsorption pattern of this protein on model hydrophilic (clean glass) and hydrophobic trichloro(octadecyl)silane (ODS) surfaces known to strongly affect the behavior of other matrix proteins. The amount of fluorescently labeled Col IV was quantified showing saturation of the surface for concentration of the adsorbing solution of about 50microg/ml, but with approximately twice more adsorbed protein on ODS. AFM studies revealed a fine - nearly single molecular size - network arrangement of Col IV on hydrophilic glass, which turns into a prominent and growing polygonal network consisting of molecular aggregates on hydrophobic ODS. The protein layer forms within minutes in a concentration-dependent manner. We further found that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) attach less efficiently to the aggregated Col IV (on ODS), as judged by the significantly altered cell spreading, focal adhesions formation and the development of actin cytoskeleton. Conversely, the immunofluorescence studies for integrins revealed that the fine Col IV network formed on hydrophilic substrata is better recognized by the cells via both alpha1 and alpha2 heterodimers which support cellular interaction, apart from these on hydrophobic ODS where almost no clustering of integrins was observed.

Two full-length cDNA clones of PoleFAD2 and one full-length cDNA clone of PoleFAD6, encoding omega-6 fatty acid desaturases, the key enzymes for the conversion of oleic into linoleic acid, were isolated from purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) leaves and seeds. The deduced amino acid sequence of both isoforms of PoleFAD2 showed higher similarities to other microsomal omega-6 desaturases then to PoleFAD6 or other plastidial orthologues, and vice versa. Expression analysis by RT-PCR showed that all genes are expressed in all tissues of purslane tested, but higher levels of mRNA accumulation were detected in reproductive organs and cells that proliferate rapidly or store lipids. Wounding affected the levels of mRNA accumulation of both, FAD2 and FAD6 genes in purslane leaves, while chilling stress affected only FAD2 transcript level. The expression patterns observed reflect the discrete roles of these genes in membrane synthesis for cell division, thylakoid development, and lipid storage or in the biosynthetic pathway for the production of signaling molecules that influence plant development or defense.

Recent environmental concerns have prompted a re-evaluation of conventional management strategies and refueled the search of innovative waste management practices. In this sense, the anaerobic digestion of both fat and the remaining complex organic matter present in dairy wastewaters is attractive, although the continuous operation of high rate anaerobic processes treating this type of wastewaters causes the failure of the process. This work accesses the influence of non-feeding period length on the intermittent operation of mesophilic UASB reactors treating dairy wastewater, in order to allow the biological degradation to catch up with adsorption phenomenon. During the experiments, two UASB reactors were subject to three organic loading rates, ranging from 6 to 12 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1), with the same daily load applied to both reactors, each one with a different non-feeding period. Both reactors showed good COD removal efficiencies (87-92%). A material balance for COD in the reactors during the feeding and non-feeding periods showed the importance of the feedless period, which allowed the biomass to degrade substrate that was accumulated during the feeding period. The reactor with the longest non-feeding period had a better performance, which resulted in a higher methane production and adsorption capacity for the same organic load applied with a consequent less accumulation of substrate into the biomass. In addition, both reactors had a stable operation for the organic load of 12 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1), which is higher than the maximum applicable load reported in literature for continuous systems (3-6 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1)).
